Boston blast suspect’s trial may be moved to ensure impartiality
Read on the website Vestnik KavkazaLawyers for Jokhar Tsarnayev, the suspected organizer of the Boston Marathon blast, may request hearings of their client’s case to be held in another city to ensure the trial is unbiased. Whether they do or not depends on Eric Holder, US Attorney General, who may ask for the death sentence for Tsarnayev, The Voice of Russia reports.
Holder is expected to announce his decision in late January 2014. The request to hold the trial in a city other than Boston should be filed no later than on February 28, 2014. The lawyers have requested postponement of hearings.
According to the US law, trials are held in cities where a crime happens. Lawyers may request trials to be held elsewhere if they suspect a biased attitude.
3 people were killed and over 260 injured in a blast during the Boston Marathon of April 15, 2013, followed by another blast 12 seconds later. 26-year-old Tamerlan and 20-year-old Dzhokhr Tsarnayevs are suspected of the blasts. Tamerlan was killed in a shootout with the police. His brother was caught in a motorboat at the backyard of a private house on the outskirts of Boston. The first hearings for the case took place in July. Dzhokhar has not pled guilty to any of the 30 charges against him.
