Russian migration officials uncover thousands of 'rubber apartments'

The Federal Migration Service of Russia said that over 10,000-11,000 apartments with a total of over 600,000 inhabitants registered in them had been uncovered in the country by the end of 2013, said Alexander Aksenov, Head of the department for registry and passports of the FMS, Interfax reports.

The law on the so-called rubber apartments came into force in early January 2014. Punishments for violating the registration rules and migration control will be more severe.
