Abdelfattah Osman, Egyptian Assistant Interior Minister for the Mass Media, said this morning that over 55% of the population had voted and 95% of it approved the new Constitution.

The referendum on the Constitution took place on January 14-15. Over 52 million people had the right to vote. The results will be announced 72 hours after the elections.

The new Constitution has 247 pages. It bans formation of political parties and religious-based policies. The Consultative Council (the upper chamber of parliament) will be disbanded.

The old Constitution was passed in December 2012 and was scrapped by the military after President Mohamed Morsi’s fall in July 2013.
