Embarrassing situaion of Ankara at "Geneva -2"
Read on the website Vestnik KavkazaWith scandals on the first day of the "Geneva -2" international conference on a Syrian settlement in Montreux involving U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon and Syrian Foreign Minister Walid Muallem, the attitude of one of Syria's key neighbors, Turkey, was somewhat aloof, although the Minister of Foreign Affairs Ahmet Davutoglu participated in the plenary session and spoke immediately after Kerry.
For this reason, VK appealed to Turkish experts: vice president of the Academy of European Security Hussein Bagdzi and deputy general chairman of the Republican People 's Party of Turkey, the President of the Eurasian Center for Strategic Studies, member of the Turkish parliament , political scientist Farouk Logoglu, for clarification of Ankara's position on a diplomatic settlement of the Syrian conflict and its current position on the war in Syria.
According to Hussein Bagdzi, Turkey has now receded into the background and is not one of the key countries at Geneva -2. "The main problems in the Syrian issue are not decided by Ankara, but by Washington and Moscow, as well as by countries that advocate their point of view. Of course, one cannot deny the fact that Turkey is an important regional power in the Middle East, but still it does not dictate the rules. Thus, a settlement of the conflict in Syria became a moral issue for Turkey, and the country builds its Syrian policy from these positions," he says.
Bagdzi noted that an end to the civil war in Syria will come only through the efforts of all parties, including the Western countries. "In this regard, apart from the regional players and world powers, such countries as India and China should also have their say. Moreover, the positions of Iran and Saudi Arabia will be crucial," the expert says, adding that Turkey's President, despite occasional words of encouragement addressed to him, says Bashar al-Assad "was a dictator, and still is."
In turn, Doctor of Political Sciences Faruk Logoglu expects an end to the Syrian conflict only when the world community reaches a consensus though the international community. He expresses indignation about Turkey's policy towards Syria. "In fact, the 'Justice and Development Party' maintains a very harmful policy. It is necessary to remain impartial in relation to events in the region, but the ruling party actively took one side of the conflict, just as it did in the case of the Israeli-Palestinian and Iraqi issues. Erdogan declares that he is on the side of the Syrian opposition, and in Egypt he supports Morsi or acts as the defender of Sunnis from Shiite. This position shows Turkey in a very unpleasant light, making it a marginal country," warns the analyst.
According to him, such a position not only spoils the reputation of Turkey, but also poses a threat to national security. "All of this comes from the short-sighted foreign policy. Could one imagine before that the Syrian foreign minister, pointing with his finger to Ahmet Davutoglu, the foreign minister of a neighboring country, would blame Turkey for the raging fire in his homeland ? But this happened yesterday. And such accusations are not suitable for Turkey, as they expose it in a bad way," Faruk Logoglu believes.
