Russian parliament may give Crimea chance to merge with Russia

The A Fair Russia faction in the lower house of the Russian parliament has proposed simplification of the mechanism for mergence of foreign states and territories with Russia, Kommersant reports.According to article 4 of the law on annexation of new regions (2001), both international subjects need to give approval and sign a treaty in order to merge.Mikhail Yemelyanenkov, the deputy head of the faction, confirmed the initiative.The Supreme Council of the Crimea agreed yesterday to hold a referendum on May 25 to decide its status.

According to Article 4 of the law on annexation of new regions (2001), both international entities need to give their approval and sign a treaty in order to merge.

Mikhail Yemelyanenkov, the deputy head of the faction, confirmed the initiative.

The Supreme Council of the Crimea agreed yesterday to hold a referendum on March 25 to decide its status.
