But the game's decisive moment came on 76 minutes as Birmingham player Fahey slammed into the net from eight yards after Keane's initial effort had been blocked following a clever Lawrence ball.

Armenia put on late pressure and the excellent Lawrence made a vital late clearance in injury time.

Ireland is considered the main opponent of the Russian team in the group qualifying round of the championship.
