Referendum on independence being held in Ukraine's Lugansk and Donetsk regions

A referendum on independence is being held in the Ukrainian regions of Lugansk and Donetsk. According to Roman Lyagin, the head of the Central Electoral Commission of the self-proclaimed People's Republic of Donetsk, the vote is proceeding according to schedule.

The rebels underline that they will consider the referendum valid regardless of turnout.
