Pro-Russian activists in the Southern Ukrainian city of Odessa are going to hold a referendum on May 25. The presidential elections in Ukraine are scheduled to be held on the same day.

Some of the activists demand independence, while others - an autonomous status for the region.

"I believe a referendum is necessary. It would be wise to hold it on May 25," local lawmaker Alexey Albu is quoted as saying.
