Russian experts optimistic about processes in Syria
Read on the website Vestnik KavkazaThe results of the Syrian presidential polls will be announced this evening. Observers from 30 countries, including the U.S. and Canada, have already recognized the elections as democratic and legitimate. Experts say that President Bashar al-Assad is the obvious favourite of voters. Other candidates Maher Abd Al-Hafiz Hajjar and Hassan al-Nouri said that Syria was a different country where pluralism was taking root.
Ambassador Petr Stegny, deputy head of the Association of Russian Diplomats, said that he had taken part in consultations with the opposition and discussed opportunities for dialogue with the government. The diplomat expects the elections to encourage negotiations and strengthen efforts to fight extremism.
Constantine Sivkov, the presidential of the Academy for Geopolitical Problems, pointed out that the elections had not been ruined, despite the situation in the country. He added that no candidates had been removed from the elections. In his words, the Syrian authorities had proven that they were strong and attempts to oust them were useless. The expert believes that the U.S. has fewer chances to control the resources of the Middle East and North Africa.
Oleg Fomin, a co-chair of the Committee for Solidarity with the Syrian People, a member of the Imperial Orthodox Palestine Society, expressed confidence that the republic was close to a peaceful life. He said that the population had been positive towards Assad and his family. Russia and China will probably help Syria rebuild itself, the expert supposes.
