Valentina Matviyenko, the speaker of the Federation Council of Russia, said at the Belarus and Russia Forum of Regions in Minsk that Russia may become a major world food supplier. She reminded that Russia imported about a third of all its food consumed, RIA Novosti reports.

Matviyenko noted the need to control GMO products, develop eco products and protect consumers from low-quality products. She believes that Russia and Belarus have a basis for enforcing food security as Union States.

The Belarus and Russia Forum of Regions was organized in Minsk on June 5-6. It is attended by members of the Federation Council of Russia, the Council of the Belarusian Republic, authorities of the Union State and the Eurasian Economic Commission, businessmen and other officials. The forum focuses on development of agriculture in the context of food security.
