The referendum on changes to the constitution has closed this evening in Turkey with 80% of the votes already counted. The majority of voters approved the constitutional reforms, according to preliminary estimates. 60% of the cast votes counted so far have been for the constitutional reforms, Reuters reports.

The amendments were initiated by the Justice and Development Party and supported by the European Union. The Peace and Democracy Party called for a boycott of the referendum. The amendments refer mainly to the judicial system of the republic and strengthening of democratic institutions.

The results of the referendum will probably have a great influence on the future political development of the country.
