U.S. to monitor Turkish presidential polls

 

The U.S. State Department said that Washington will scrupulously monitor the presidential polls of Turkey, taking no sides in the process.The presidential elections in Turkey will be held on August 10. The second round of vote will be organized on August 21, unless a candidate gets at least 51% of votes.According to the 2007 referendum, the president will be elected by the population for 5 years. Before the referendum, the president had been elected by the parliament for 7 years.The ruling Justice and Development Party endorsed Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan as a candidate for president yesterday.
