Caspian region center of attention again
Read on the website Vestnik KavkazaThe Caspian region is again at the center of public attention.
Politicians seem to be interested in further continuation of the talks
about the Caspian Sea's status, and the development of cooperation
between the Caspian countries. For instance, Azerbaijani President
Ilkham Aliyev has said that it would be good to sign a convention on
the Caspian Sea's status as soon as possible. He also suggested a
summit in Baku and the idea was supported by the Russian president.
For more than 10 years the issue has been a matter of wide discussion.
Prominent diplomats and experts have been taking part in talks, but to
no avail. The intention of the leaders of the Caspian states to settle
the matter will, perhaps, help the parties to come to a compromise
decision.
The summit in Baku will not probably be held before December. Moreover
it's necessary to reach an agreement on the agenda of the meeting, to
decide what issues will be discussed. While the summit looks
promising, the position of Iran remains the same. Iran insists on the
equal use of the Caspian's resources.
