Georgian opposition wants Russian TV channels banned again

Georgy Baramidze, a member of parliament of Georgian ex-President Mikheil Saakashvili's United National Movement, proposed banning of Russian TV channels in the country. The parliamentary majority said they were not planning to discuss the issue, Interfax reports.

Levan Berdzenishvili, a leader of the parliamentary majority, noted that European standards did not allow blocking information channels. He reminded that such initiative would be offensive for the population. Berdzenishvili added that Saakashvili had banned certain books when he was the director of the National Library.

Saakashvili banned Russian channels in 2008. The ban was lifted in 2013.
