Presidential elections start in Abkhazia

The presidential elections are being held in the Georgian breakaway republic of Abkhazia today. Polling stations opened at 8 am. There are over 130 thousand voters registered in the republic.

The preliminary results are expected to be announced on Monday.

Four candidates are running for president. They are Aslan Bzhania, Leonid Dzapshba, Mirab Kishmaria and Raul Khadzhimba.

The candidates have recently signed an agreement aimed at establishing national unity and conducting a political reform in Abkhazia.

According to the agreement, the executive political bodies after the elections will be formed by the coalition of existing parties.
