Yesterday the senate of the American state of California made the decision to recognize the independence of the self-proclaimed "Nagorno-Karabakh Republic". The relevant draft resolution was submitted in January and actively pressed forward by senators Michael Gateaux, Kevin de León and Tom Berrikhillom.Political scientists Sergey Markov, Fikret Sadykhov and Togrul Ismail, in conversation with correspondents of "Vestnik Kavkaza", decided that the provocative resolution by the senate of California doesn't correspond to the approach of the leadership of the USA to the settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict and was accepted under pressure from powerful lobbying forces in the state."This decision absolutely contradicts the official position of the USA recognizing the territorial integrity of Azerbaijan, and it is connected with the very strong Armenian diaspora in California achieving such recognition," the head of the commission on international cooperation and public diplomacy of the civic chamber of the Russian Federation Sergey Markov said. However this recognition won't have any international effect, as the senate of California is only a body of local government, and it has no access to the international relations and foreign policy of the USA.According to Markov, it is a question only of propaganda success, which won't affect in any way the position of the USA on Nagorno-Karabakh.Professor of the Western University Fikret Sadykhov suggested not looking for deep reasons in the event. "In California there are a lot of influential Armenian groups which influence both the financial and the political life of the state, this fact is common knowledge. Therefore, acceptance of any paper under which only some of the Californian senators have signed is a result of the influence of the systematic work of these forces in the senate."The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan condemned the adoption of this document by the Californian senate, calling it "an instance of political corruption."
