The Russian Public Chamber Commission for Development of Public Diplomacy and Support of Compatriots Abroad organized a round table conference entitled “A new stage of relations of Russian and Azerbaijan. The results of 23 years of independence of the Azerbaijani Republic.” Participants in the conference discussed visits of Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, Vice Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin, Minister for Agriculture Alexey Ulyukayev, Defense Minister Sergey Shoygu, Speaker of the Federation Council Valentina Matviyenko, Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin, LDPR leader Vladimir Zhirinovsky and other politicians to Baku in the last 4 months.

Political analyst Sergey Markov reminded that the Russian community had been comfortable in Azerbaijan in the years of independence. He noted that the rating of President Ilham Aliyev in Azerbaijan was similar to the rating of President Putin in Russia. In his words, Ilham Aliyev was responsible for the development of the country, his wife Mehriban for the style. Even Zhirinovsky was impressed by Azerbaijan, Markov points out.

Dmitry Savelyev, the head of the Russian-Azerbaijani inter-factional group, a member of the State Duma, admitted that he had been amazed by Baku in 2009. He noted that the republic was making maximum use of oil resources. The official believes that Armenia should leave the occupied territories for the benefit of both countries.

Prof. Iosif Diskin, a co-chair of the Council for National Strategy, noted that Azerbaijan was consolidated and stable, had a differentiated system of international relations. He reminded that the visit of Shoygu to Baku was one of the first steps to enforce security. He added that the 4th Caspian Summit in Astrakhan was a demonstration of mutual respect.

Georgy Fedorov, a member of the Public Chamber, said that Azerbaijan was showing fascinating rates of development, culture and infrastructure. He called the republic an undoubted strategic partner. Destabilization in the Middle East, Fedorov reminded, was forcing countries to intensify security policy and consolidation processes.

Sergey Mamedov, a member of the Federation Council Committee for Regulations and Organizing Parliamentary Work, said that relations between Russia and Azerbaijan were on the rise. He added that no other country treated the Russian language the way Azerbaijan did.

Vyacheslav Igrunov, the director of the International Institute for Humanitarian and Political Studies, congratulated Azerbaijan on its independence. He called the situation of Azerbaijan alarming due to instability in the Middle East. The analyst added that the Nagorno-Karabakh problem needed a solution.

Azerbaijani Ambassador to Russia Polad Bulbulogly thanked politicians and political analysts for attention to Azerbaijan. The Nagorno-Karabakh conflict remained the biggest problem of the republic, he said. The diplomat noted that Russia should announce its friends publicly.
