Turkey celebrates Republic Day

Today the residents of Turkey are celebrating a national holiday - the Day of the Republic. This holiday was founded in memory of the day on 29 October 1923, when Mustafa Kemal Atatürk officially and finally proclaimed Turkey to be a republic. After that in the Grand National Assembly of Turkey a vote  was taken, as a result of which Ataturk was unanimously elected as the first president of the Republic of Turkey.On the occasion of Republic Day in Turkey various festive and entertaining events are held, and by tradition the events end with colourful fireworks. The celebration lasts 35 hours: Republic Day starts being celebrated at 1pm on 28 October, and the holiday comes to an end at exactly midnight on 30 October 30.
