Russia, Ukraine and EU reach gas agreement

Russian Energy Minister Alexander Novak, his Ukrainian counterpart Yuri Prodan and European Commissioner for Energy Policy Gunther Oettinger reached a gas agreement in Brussels last night. Russian gas supplies to Ukraine, halted on June 16, will be renewed. Ukraine was given a discount of $100, it will pay $378 per thousand cubic meters. Ukraine will buy gas for about $1.5 billion, RIA Novosti reports.

Ukraine will soon pay $1.45 billion towards its gas debt and $1.65 billion more at the end of the year. President of the European Commission Jose Manuel Barroso said that the sides need to respect each other’s interests.

Novak said that Ukraine will get 4 billion cubic meters of gas in November and December, according to prepayment agreements with Naftogaz, arrival of the first tranche and restructuring of the debt. He clarified that the discount will be in force from November 2014 to March 2015.
