Georgian foreign minister resigns

Georgian Foreign Minister Maya Panjikidze has resigned today. Her decision was made in the light of Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili’s dismissal of Defense Minister Irakli Alasania, the leader of the Free Democrats Party, of which Panjikidze is a member, Trend reports.

She said that the defense minister was dismissed for political reasons and called it an attack on pro-Western forces in the Georgian government.

Panjikidze said that she had done a lot in her two years heading the Foreign Ministry. Her deputies David Zalkaliani, Tamar Beruchashvili and David Jalagania have resigned as well. Panjikidze has also left the Georgian Dream coalition.
