US, Azerbaijani presidents meet

The presidents of Azerbaijan and the USA, Ilham Aliyev and Barack Obama, met in New York on Friday. The two presidents praised the development of Azerbaijani-US relations, which, they said, were based on principles of strategic cooperation, Newz.Az reports.

Barack Obama emphasised President Aliyev`s leadership role, calling Azerbaijan the most successful and one of the most influential countries in the region.

The two presidents stressed the importance of their countries' bilateral ties in the economic, energy and security sectors in terms of strengthening regional cooperation. They also touched upon the joint activities of Azerbaijan and the United States in international anti-terrorism operations.

According to the presidents, the two countries had enjoyed fruitful cooperation in the energy sector for many years. Azerbaijan`s contribution to expanding international energy cooperation was highly appreciated.


On the topic of the conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan over Nagorno-Karabakh, the presidents stressed the necessity to find the fastest possible solution to the problem, in order to ensure peace and stability in the region. President Aliyev made particular mention of the negotiation process, reiterating the importance of solving the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict based on the principle of Azerbaijan`s territorial integrity.

Presidents Aliyev and Obama discussed the democratic development processes in Azerbaijan. The two presidents also exchanged views on regional and international problems.
