Iranian President Hassan Rouhani's visit to Azerbaijan was a historical event, the head of the Centre for Contempoprary Iranian Research Rajab Safarov told Vestnik Kavkaza in an interview.

"Media often report that Iranian-Azerbaijani relations are rather complicated, that there are some serious tensions between the two states. Some of these reports are not baseless," the expert said.

"Hassan Rouhani's visit has helped to ease those tensions," he said. "It will have a major positive impact on mutual ties."

"I believe that this visit was a remarkable one. I think it was very successful. Such contacts are always very important," Safarov said.

According to Safarov, the presidents paid special attention to mutual economic ties, which right now are not so close. President Rouhani's visit has contributed much to the development of bilateral relations and will lead to particular joint projects, he said.
