EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini, European Commissioner for Neighbourhood Policy Johannes Hahn and European Commissioner for Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Management Christos Stylianides will make a two-day visit to Turkey today, a week after Russian President Vladimir Putin. The European politicians will try to persuade Turkey to give up close cooperation with Russia.

Their visit, organized as one of the first steps of the new European Commission, emphasizes the importance of Turkey to the EU as a candidate to join the European Union and as an important neighbour, RIA Novosti reports.

European officials will also discuss the fight against ISIS and monitoring the transit of EU citizens to the Middle East, where they join extremist organizations. Brussels will ask the Turkish authorities to help identify foreign militants and provide air support.
