At the end of last week, Defense Ministers of NATO countries responded to a "potential threat from Russia" by reinforcing the presence of NATO in Eastern Europe. NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said that NATO would increase its presence from 13 to 30 thousand people. Command centers will be created in six NATO countries - Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, Poland, Bulgaria and Romania. At the same time, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine ratified an agreement on the establishment of a Lithuanian-Polish-Ukrainian team which will participate in NATO operations. These measures coincided with the visit of U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry to Kiev.
Political analyst Sergei Mikheyev believes that in a situation like that, Russia is not the main goal of the U.S., as it might seem at first glance, but the EU: "The Americans are drugging Europe into war. It is difficult to say who will win it, but Europe will lose for sure. And the countries which play the role of the frontier of Western civilization will be destroyed. And this will put an end to their national histories."
The expert believes that the current political strategies of Eastern European countries are deeply contrary to their national historical mythologies and state interests: "Historical myths always pay a lot of attention to how these poor, small countries fell victims of confrontation between the East and the West, similar to the division of the territory of Poland between Germany and the Soviet Union, how the "poor" countries and Baltic States suffered... It would seem that in the new century, the political elites of these countries would find it necessary to have a strategy that would never allow anything like that to happen again. But it's the opposite. The elites of these countries are leading them to once again becoming a battleground between the East and the West, and to being destroyed at a new stage of their development."
Sergei Mikheyev called the official explanation for the deployment of NATO centers in Eastern Europe absurd and purely defensive in nature: "Do Brussels and other European capitals really believe that Russia can strike at the territory of Romania, Poland or the Baltic states in order to capture these territories? Do people seriously believe that, for example, Russian troops are ready to make a push Bucharest or Warsaw? Objective data does not confirm the likelihood of such attacks and pushes. This means that in fact they are preparing for an active offensive or that there is something wrong with them."
The expert believes that Europe is making a serious historical mistake, not taking into account the habits of the United States to benefit at the expense of wars on European territory. "They benefited from the First and Second World Wars and will maybe benefit from the Third World War as well. This situation is ordinary for Americans, it is the operative situation, so to speak."
Mikheyev believes that the long-term goal of the US is to eliminate the risk of competition posed by the EU, putting it in the position of someone who needs help of America. According to him, "the Americans are fighting not for Russia, and certainly not for Ukraine - they are fighting for Europe. To bind Europe to themselves as much as possible, through the creation of illusions of different threats is the main goal of the Americans, because if Europe truly becomes independent, the West will split into two. It will give rise to an alternative West. And in such case, the Americans will have to compete not only with China and Russia, but also with Europe. The EU as a competitor frightens the Americans the most. The most reliable way to tie Europe to themselves is to plunge it into a situation of military tension."
