Dagestani senator declares new stage in Russian-Iranian ties

Ilyas Umakhanov, deputy speaker of the Federation Council, a Dagestani senator, and Aslambek Aslakhanov, the president of the Association of Workers of Law Enforcement and Special Services of Russia, told Vestnik Kavkaza at a reception on the anniversary of the Islamic Revolution at the Iranian ambassador’s residence in Moscow that Russia-Iranian relations were at a new stage. Umakhanov emphasized that Russia and Iran had historical, cultural and spiritual values. The countries cooperate in the political and security sectors, exploitation of the Caspian Sea.

The senator paid special attention to the economic sector, which includes cooperation in atomic energy, extraction, exploration and processing of hydrocarbons, investment projects. Umakhanov noted the great interest of Russians in development of relations with Iran throughout the last decades, which includes small and medium-scale business. He reminded that the Russian and Iranian parliaments are cooperating, committees and friendship groups interacting. Speaker of the Iranian Parliament Ali Larijani will soon visit Russia.

Aslakhanov called Iran an important food supplier of Russia. He noted that Russia had spoken against anti-Iranian sanctions at the UNSC within the framework of the nuclear profile. The official said that Iran had been the first state to establish diplomatic ties with the Russian Empire 450 years ago.

Iranian Ambassador to Russia Mehdi Sanai said at a press conference on the Revolution Day of Iran yesterday that contacts between Moscow, Baku and Tehran were a guarantee of security in the region. In his words, the number of mutual visits was growing. The ambassador reminded that Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif had visited Moscow four times, Speaker of the Russian State Duma Sergey Naryshkin and Secretary of the Russian Security Council Nikolai Patrushev had also visited Iran.
