Šefčovič: only Azerbaijan has an alternative source of gas for Europe
Read on the website Vestnik KavkazaThe Southern Gas Corridor is the only project which guarantees major gas supplies from new source, the Vice President of the European Commission, Maroš Šefčovič, said. “This is an extremely large project with an estimated cost of implementation of 45 billion euros," he added.
He also said that the conflict in the south-east of Ukraine has pushed the EU member states to accelerate the diversification of energy supply sources, and the process of creating the European Energy Union.
"The EU is extremely tired of worrying every summer about energy supplies for the coming winter. The energy security issues are controlled by top political leaders," Tass cited him as saying.
Šefčovič expects that the project of creating the European Energy Union will be supported by the European Council in March this year. "The European Union will provide energy security for the EU. Its creation will mean the implementation of plans for the construction of a single European energy market and the elimination of existing technical and administrative barriers," the Vice President of the European Commission added.
