UN and Arab League Envoy to Syria Staffan de Mistura said that a truce may be declared in Aleppo. The envoy has recently met with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and discussed the 6-week cessation of air operations over Aleppo. Mistura clarified that Aleppo was chosen as a district to set an example, to show the population what it could get from freezing the conflict.

Alexander Dzasokhov, vice president of the Russian Foreign Affairs Council, an ex-president of North Ossetia, said that Syria was characterized by the presence of classical Islam, Arabic literature, the Aramaic language (the language of Christ in Ma’loula).

The diplomat noted that Syria was a secular state with different religions. Syria has been essential as an independent state in the Middle East since the times of President Hafez al-Assad. Dzasokhov said that the Caucasus would have been affected if the Syrian state had fallen. He added that Syria has remained a sovereign state for the last four years because of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s position.

The expert reminded that 100,000 Syrians had been educated in Russia, 35,000 families consisted of Syrian men and Russian women.
