"We are not at war with Islam - we are at war with people who have perverted Islam," U.S. leader Barack Obama told delegates at the White House Summit on Countering Violent Extremism.

Speaking of the leaders of Al-Qaeda and Islamic State, Obama added that "they are not religious leaders, they are terrorists."

In addition, the US president dismissed suggestions that Islam calls for violence as a religion. "No religion is responsible for terrorism - people are responsible for violence and terrorism," he said.

Obama also called on Islamic religious leaders to "do more" to fight extremism. The head of state acknowledged the abuse by US law enforcement officers in relation to Muslim Americans.

"We have to be honest: I know that many Muslim Americans are concerned about cooperation with the authorities, especially the police," he said. "It is necessary to cease violations so they do not recur, and more, we need to ensure that the entire community of people is not subjected to charges," Obama said.

Also in his speech at the summit, he said that the United States expects to outline concrete steps to counter extremism in the UN General Assembly this fall. "I urge the governments to come to the United Nations this fall with proposals for concrete steps we can take together," RIA Novosti cited Obama.

Senior researcher at the Institute of Oriental Studies, Vladimir Sazhin, told 'Vestnik Kavkaza' that Islamic State is a real threat to the world. "This Obama's statement confirms that the IS is the most dangerous branch of Islamic radicalism. So, the US led coalition against IS now," he said.At the same time, according to Sazhin, a situation exacerbated by the fact that the IS is a complex phenomenon, which is fueled by resources from a variety of sources. "IS is a very complex phenomenon. It is not only fanatical Islamists who were the part of al-Qaeda in Iraq. There are representatives of, for example, the armed forces of Saddam Hussein in Iraq, and opponents of Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad, and representatives of the European countries, and even people of Russia," the researcher at the Institute of Oriental Studies said .So the international community must unite their efforts to strike a blow to the organization. "To deal with the IS it needs a powerful coalition that would not only be carried out air strikes against IS targets, but also to land operations. The Americans are already thinking about how to conduct land operations in Iraq against the IS. In addition,  Kurds and the Iranian military are fighting against the organization.
