Russia to assist in settling issue of Cyprus

Russia will assist in a peaceful settlement of the issue of Cyprus, by
supporting a single independent state, Russian President Dmitry
Medvedev said in Nicosia, RIA Novosti reports.

Cyprus has been split since 1974, when Turkey launched a military
invasion after the coup organized by the Greek group called the ‘Black
Colonels'. Greek and Turkish Cypriots are negotiating the unity of the
island. According to the UN, the island should have a double-zone
federation.
