Russian language returns to Georgia

Free Russian language courses organized by the Russian-Georgian community center, together with the Russian Foundation for Public Diplomacy named after Gorchakov, began being held in Tbilisi. These courses have become so popular that twice as many people responded to the announcement of its creation as the organizers could enrol in the first stream. As a result, 30 people aged between 20 and 30 were selected, because Georgian youth speak Russian much worse than the older generation.The Deputy Executive Director of the Alexander Gorchakov Public Diplomacy Fund, Roman Grishenin, talking about the decision to open free courses, noted that in recent years the Russian language is becoming more and more popular in Georgia.Students of the first stream divided into two groups - with primary and secondary levels of language proficiency. Classes are conducted twice a week in the evenings. According to the organizers, the citizens of Georgia continue to want to participate in the future stream of free Russian language courses.The head of the sociological service Gorbi, Merab Pachulia, told Vestnik Kavkaza that forgetting the Russian language in Georgia is comparable to a crime. "About seven years ago, Saakashvili invited a few hundred English teachers to Georgia. These guys came and did a good job, but we started to forget Russian, although it is important that you can learn very good Russian at a cheap price. You shouldn't miss such an opportunity. And if you take our history, forgetting the Russian language in Georgia is comparable to suicide," Pachulia said."We communicate with colleagues, friends from Armenia, Azerbaijan, Russia and Ukraine in Russian. But now the Russian language is forgetting, and we have not yet learned English that well to speak with the rest of the countries. So, of course, I personally welcome the opening of Russian language courses in Georgia, this is normal," the expert said.
