The Syrian opposition addressed President of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev to be a mediator in the talks on a resolution of the crisis in Syria. According to representatives of various groups of the Syrian opposition, Astana has everything to encourage not only a dialogue between movements in the opposition, but also to return peace to Syria.

Speaking about Kazakhstan's increasing role in the world arena, Yefim Pivovar, member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, chancellor of the Russian State University for the Humanities, states that in terms of the challenges and crises which occur in the world, Kazakhstan's role is in demand. Kazakhstan suggested holding negotiations on Ukraine on its territory before signing the Minsk agreement. All the relevant countries were satisfied with this suggestion.”

Two weeks are left before the early presidential elections in Kazakhstan. According to Pivovar, “the electoral process and elections are the result of the worsening of the situation in the world. We cannot help taking into account that Kazakhstan supports a traditional multi-vector policy, with priority placed on strategic relations in the context of bilateral relations between Russia and Kazakhstan, the Eurasian Economic Union and the Commonwealth of Independent States. These priorities do not prevent Kazakhstan from demonstrating the success and effectiveness of its policy. In terms of the obvious crisis in international relations and the aggravation of relations between Russia, the European Union and the USA, the superpowers are going to receive unreserved support from countries which pursue a multi-vector policy in prejudice of its policy and aggravation of relations to their traditional allies.”

Pivovar thinks that in these terms, Kazakhstan needs a correct strategy of foreign policy and tactics which are demonstrated by Kazakhstan: “The key point in this multi-vector strategy is relations between Russia and Kazakhstan. That is why I think that it is one of the fundamental bases and prospects for Kazakhstan. I hope that the election results will not influence this strategic basis and it becomes stronger.”
