Kiev holds CIS Energy Council
Read on the website Vestnik KavkazaKiev will host the 38th session of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) Energy Council, participated in by the energy administrations and companies of the CIS members.
The council will be chaired by its president, Russian Minister of Energy Sergey Shmatko, RIA Novosti reports.
One of the main issues is preparation of the CIS for the autumn-winter period 2010-2011. They plan to discuss events to mark the 20th anniversary of the CIS, documents prepared by the working group for forming a common energy market of the CIS and the coordination council for fulfillment of the cooperation strategy of the CIS.
They will also consider cooperation of the CIS Energy Council with EURELECTRIC and other international organizations, the balance of ownership and maintenance of inter-state power lines.
The CIS Energy Council and its functional structure, the Executive Committee, were formed according to an inter-state agreement of CIS countries signed in February 1992.
The council consists of the heads of the energy administrations of the CIS. The council’s members are Azerbaijan, Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Ukraine and the chairman of the Executive Committee. The president and the vice-president of the council are elected according to a rotating system.
The main goal of the CIS Energy Council is reliable energy supply, using a single technical base of energy and organizing the stable parallel work of national energy systems.
Ten out of twelve national energy systems of the CIS have synchronized their work. CIS energy systems work in parallel to the energy systems of Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia and Mongolia. Energy is exchanged with Armenia, Norway, Finland, Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, Turkey, Iran, Afghanistan and China.
