Obama extends sanctions on Syria

On May 11, 2004, US President George Bush issued an Executive Order that declared a national emergency with respect to the actions of the Syrian government and imposed sanctions on individuals and entities.
"The President took these actions to deal with the unusual and extraordinary threat to the national security, foreign policy, and economy of the United States," TASS cited the document. It also notes that the actions of the Government of Syria destabilize the region. In addition, Washington has once again accused the authorities of putting pressure on its citizens.
According to Obama, "US national security, economy and foreign policy is threatened by Syria". "I have determined that it is necessary to continue in effect the national emergency declared with respect to this threat and to maintain in force the sanctions to address this national emergency," the US President said.
