Mehdi Khazali, an ophthalmologist and a blogger, was arrested in Iran on the 13th of October for "activities against national security and disturbing public opinion," the Payvand news agency reports, citing local press.

Mehdi Khazali has repeatedly criticized Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in his blog and website during the past two years. Khazali is a son of a prominent conservative cleric, Ayatollah Abolghassem Khazal, who has disowned his son.

Previously, in September 2009, another Iranian blogger, Hossein Derakhshan, was sentenced to 19 and a half years in prison after having written in his blog about his visit to Israel.
