Araghchi: US Senate's decision may postpone implementation of nuclear deal
Read on the website Vestnik KavkazaDeputy Foreign Minister of Iran Abbas Araghchi said the US Senate’s intervention could delay implementation of a deal only for about 2 months.
"A Senate intervention can only postpone the implementation of a nuclear deal for approximately 2 months and has no other effect," TASS cited the Minister with reference to the IRNA agency.
The US Senate last week passed legislation which will make it possible for Congress to review and potentially reject a pending nuclear deal with Iran. The bill gives Congress 30 days to review a final nuclear deal after Iran and the P5+1 countries reach such an agreement, and during that time bars President Barack Obama from temporarily waiving any US sanctions on Iran that were passed by Congress.
"If we assume that Congress can override the US President’s veto, who will lose? Certainly, the Americans will. Because we will continue our path, P5+1 unity will be lost, sanctions will be shaken, and the outcoming results will be for Iran," the senior negotiator told the parliamentary commission.
If Congress approves the deal – or fails to not approve it within a certain time-frame – the President’s deal can move forward.
