Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev sent congratulations to the Russian athletes who performed at the First European Games in Baku, the government’s website said today.

"From the first days of the European Games you become the news-makers of these prestigious competitions. Millions of people admire your skills, fortitude and will for victory. We were sincerely cheering for you," TASS cited him as saying.

"You were unrivalled in many different sports. A record number of medals, including 79 gold, is the best proof of your excellent training," Medvedev said.
