Ex-PM of Kazakhstan to be put on trial

The Prosecutor's Office of the Karaganda Region has completed studying materials related to the criminal cases of Kazakhstani ex-Prime Minister Serik Akhmetov, former akim (governor) of the Karaganda Region Baurzhan Abdishev, former akim (mayor) of Karaganda city Meyram Smagulov, and other officials (a total of 21 people) suspected of embezzling extremely large sums of money.


"Serik Akhmetov is also standing trial on charges of corruption," TASS cited a statement of the Prosecutor's Office of the Karaganda Region as saying.


Akhmetov has been under house arrest since November 2014. Akhmetov’s case is associated with crimes allegedly committed by ex-authorities of Karaganda and Karaganda Region, SPK Saryarka, Metallurgiya-Metallobrabotka, KazAgroFinance and other officials.
