Iran wants to own over 20% of Caspian Sea

The Iranian special representative for Caspian affairs, Mohammed Mehdi
Akhundzade, told journalists that, according to the agreements of 1921
and 1940, the Iranian share of the Caspian Sea should exceed 20%,
Trend reports, citing TV channel IRINN.


Akhundzade said that the Caspian countries understand that an Iranian
project can help other countries of the Caspian Sea. He did not
clarify what project he is talking about. The Iranian official added
that his country’s approach to the issue meets international
standards.


Baku will host a summit of Caspian states on November 18. The sides
have a convention on protection of the marine environment of the
Caspian, signed in November 2003.


In July 1998 Kazakhstan and Russia signed an agreement on determining
the borders of the northern part of the Caspian and in May 2002 they
signed a protocol to the convention.


On November 29, 2001, and February 27, 2003, Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan
signed an agreement to determine the borders of the Caspian Sea and a
protocol.


Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan and Russia signed an agreement on the crossing
point of the three countries’ borders of the Caspian Sea on May 14,
2003.
