Azerbaijan celebrates Constitution Day

The 1995 Constitution of the Azerbaijan Republic is the first
Constitution of an independent Azerbaijan.
The first Constitution of Azerbaijan was adopted on the 19th of May
1921. A new edition of the Constitution, the Constitution of the USSR,
was adopted on the 14th of March 1925. The next constitution dates to
the 21st of April, 1979.
After Azerbaijan gained independence there was a need to prepare a new
constitution. A special commission was created, under the leadership
of the President Heydar Aliyev, which worked on the draft
constitution. Following the approval at a referendum on the 12th of
November 1995, the first Constitution of an independent Azerbaijan was
adopted.
From that day on, the 12th of November is marked in the Azerbaijani
political calendar as Constitution Day.
