Iran plans to deploy more ships and destroyers in international waters, the deputy commander of the Navy, Admiral Gholamreza Khadem Bigham, said today, reports Press TV, citing the news agency Mehr.

Three months ago the ninth fleet of Iran and two destroyers were sent to the Gulf of Aden to defend Iranian commercial ships from the attacks by Somali pirates. Later they were joined by the tenth Iranian fleet with the destroyers "Chiro" and "Lark".

Iran's decision to send its warships is a part of international efforts  to ensure the safety of vessels in one of the busiest and most dangerous shipping routes. In recent years, Somali pirates have hijacked dozens of ships.
