The Director of the Iran Office at the US Department of State, Steve Fagin, visited Azerbaijan to discuss regional questions.

According to him, the sanctions against Iran can be brought back even after they are lifted. The UN Security Council endorsed the deal through resolution 2231 on July 21, and defined a timeline of 90 days, within which Iran has to meet certain commitments.

“Afterwards, the US and the EU announced that the package of sanctions will be eased once Iran takes all the necessary steps required under the deal and the IAEA verifies that Iran has done so,” Trend cited him as saying.

“Our focus is the date of implementation of the nuclear deal, but this depends on Iran. Iran must take the necessary steps under the deal," he stressed.

Fagin said that they "have a mechanism to discuss this agreement, but ultimately, if there are major violations of the deal, we on our own have the ability to snap back the sanctions that were lifted by the resolution of the UN Security Council.”
