Unveiling of a bas-relief of the first rector of Baku State University, Vasily Razumovsky, in Yessentuki

Last week Yessentuki hosted the grand unveiling of a bas-relief of the outstanding Russian scientist, the first rector of Baku State University, Vasily Ivanovich Razumovsky. 

"At the end of April 1919, Professor Razumovsky received from the Azerbaijani government an offer to take over the organization of the university in the city of Baku. After much debate and overcoming many barriers, the case of the establishment of the Baku State University was received by a general session of the Azerbaijani parliament. The parliament's opinion on the establishment of the university was ambiguous. There were supporters and opponents. Professor Razumovsky made an explanatory speech. Citing the words  of Vassily Ivanovich, "my explanation satisfied the parliament." And after three days of discussion the establishment of the University of Baku was approved. That day was September 1st 1919, "Abel Maharramov, the rector of Baku State University, said at the opening ceremony.
