The lifting of sanctions opens the opportunity for Iran to become a member of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation, the Iranian Foreign Minister, Hussein Jaber Ansari, said.

The SCO’s Charter stresses that a country under sanctions of the UN Security Council cannot be a full member of the organisation, TASS reminds. Now the international sanctions against Iran have been lifted, so there are no obstacles to Iran’s membership.

Iran has had observer status at the SCO since 2005.
