Vakhtang Kapanadze: Georgia may become mediator in Karabakh settlement
Read on the website Vestnik KavkazaThe head of the General Staff of the Georgian Armed Forces, Vakhtang Kapanadze, said that Georgia should act as a mediator in the settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, if possible.
He noted that Georgia is one of the countries that has good relations with both sides of the conflict.
"We are following the development of the situation very carefully. We’re having very close communication with our colleagues in Azerbaijan and Armenia and are being updated regularly," Trend cited Kapanadze as saying.
He added that sides of the conflict hadn't addressed Georgia with a request yet, adding that both sides are trying to inform Tbilisi of the recent developments.
The head of the General Staff of the Georgian Armed Forces expressed regret over the fact that "the sides failed to solve the problem by peaceful means for some reason."
According to him, "this is a painful process for the entire region."
Recall, on the night of April 2 all frontier positions of Azerbaijan were exposed to heavy fire from large-caliber weapons, mortars, grenade launchers and guns. In addition, Azerbaijani settlements near the front line, densely populated by civilians, were shelled.
