Azerbaijanis, along with other nations of the USSR, took an active part in the World War II and the Great Patriotic War, sending more than 680 thousand soldiers to the front. Almost half of them died in the battles. More than 130 Azerbaijanis were awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union for their heroism, more than 170 thousand were awarded with various orders and medals.
One of them - a fighter pilot, Lieutenant Huseynbala Aliyev. He lived on this earth for only 23 years, leaving eternal memory in the hearts of those who knew the horrors of World War II not just from history books, as well as in the hearts of those who, knowing the terrible Leningrad history, honors the memory of heroes that saved this city from ruin at the cost of their own lifes. It was during this year when Aliyev shot down three enemy "Junkers" bombers in the skies over Leningrad. For that, he was awarded with the Order of Lenin.
On July 18th, 1941, an event occurred in the 5th fighter aviation regiment, which went down in history of this regiment forever. Lieutenant Huseynbala Aliyev did not returne to the airfield - he died in air battle with 3 Ju-88 bombers, managing to shoot down two of them. It was young lieutenant's last battle. Being mortally wounded, he shot down two enemy aircraft and managed to land his aircraft. There were thirty-two wounds on his body.
In the framework of celebration of the 65th anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War, a movie "Flight of the Caucasian Eagle" was filmed. This work, as Trend Life reports, became of joint product of Azerbaijani studio "Salname" and St. Petersburg's "Lennauchfilm". It is no coincidence that the image of Huseynbala Aliyev was selected. According to the director, Tair Aliyev, "we needed a hero who would be close to both nations: Azerbaijani and Russian. In addition, recently people started to forget about the heroism of this man, and we had to remind them about it." It was filmed in Baku, Krasnodar and St. Petersburg.
"I was told about the feat of fighter pilot Huseynbala oglu Aliyev from Ivan Romanenko brigade. In his first air battle near Lake Samra, while covering our bombers, he shot down three enemy fighters. After the air battle, pilot landed heavily damaged aircraft at the airfield. People rushed to the aircraft. They saw a mortally wounded pilot in the cockpit. He even managed to tell his comrades: "Flew back ... home ... Huseynbala oglu Aliyev ... fulfilled his duty ... before the homeland ...", Miroshnichenko Gennady Ivanovich wrote about Aliyev in his book, "Wind of Baltic".
Poet Mammad Rahim dedicated his poem "Above Leningrad" to pilot. One of the streets in Baku was named after Huseynbala Aliyev.
