The proposal of the State Oil Company of Azerbaijan (SOCAR) for the construction of a gas storage facility in Georgia has been regarded positively, abc.az reports.

SOCAR Energy Georgia’s head Mahir Mammadov says that this assessment of Azerbaijani side’s proposal has been given during recent consultations with the government of Georgia.

"It early to tell about the details," Mammadov considers.

The project, on which active consultations are underway, concerns the construction of this gas storage facility at field of Samgori South Dome. The tender for the construction has not yet been announced.

An event was organized on 15 April on the presentation by French company Geostock a draft feasibility study of the construction of this first-in-Georgia gas storage facility. The main source of gas for this gas storage is from Azerbaijan.

Its estimated capacity is 210-280 million cu m (15% of total annual gas consumption by Georgia).

In Georgian government’s opinion, the construction of the gas storage in the field of Samgori South Dome will help resolve force majeure issues with providing gas and will ease the imbalance between supply and consumption of gas.
