Ayatollah Ahmad Jannati was elected as the head of Iran's new Assembly of Experts for two years, winning 51 votes out of 86.

The Assembly of Experts is a deliberative body of Mujtahids which is tasked with appointing and removing Iran's supreme leader and supervising his activities, Trend reports.

Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei said the new assembly has a duty to “carefully and comprehensively guard the Islamic and revolutionary identify of the ruling establishment and direct intertwined apparatuses of the establishment toward lofty and sublime goals,” Press TV reports.

The recent round of assembly election which was held last February was followed by greater sensitivity due to raised concerns over the Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khameni's health condition.

The Assembly of Experts has 88 members which are elected by people for eight-year term.
