Georgian helicopters help tourists to reach border with Russia

People willing to get to Russia from Georgia have been helicoptered by the Georgian police after a landslide blocked the only road linking the two countries, the Georgian Interior Ministry said.

The Ministry said up to 60 people were helicoptered from Stepantsminda to the Dariali Gorge from where they were escorted by police to the Lars checkpoint at the border with Russia.

The road section of the Mtskheta-Stepantsminda-Lars (Georgian Military Highway) which links Georgia and Russia remain closed following the June 23 mud flow in northern Georgia’s Devdoraki Gorge, Agenda.ge reports.

Georgia’s Road Department said all vehicles continued to be banned from moving along the 134-135km section of the Military Highway.
