Turkey is denying movements onto the Incirlik airbase in the wake of the attempted coup, the US consulate in Turkey has confirmed.

The base is used by the US military to bomb so-called Islamic State fighters in neighbouring Syria.

The reasons for the closure were unclear, but there was speculation it could be to put pressure on the US over Fetullah Gulen, a cleric who has lived in self-imposed exile in the US for years and whose followers the Turkish government has said were behind the coup.
