US President Barack Obama declined to sign a bill renewing the Iran Sanctions Act for another 10 years on Wednesday, allowing the legislation to become law, the White House said.

"This administration has made clear that an extension of the Iran Sanctions Act, while unnecessary, is entirely consistent with our commitments in the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA)," press secretary Josh Earnest said, referring to the US-led deal to freeze Iran's nuclear program.

"Consistent with this longstanding position, the extension of the Iran Sanctions Act is becoming law without the president's signature," he added.
